Since 2003, the German Federal Literacy Association hosts annual „Literacy Conferences“. These conferences are funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung) and are milestones in the implementation of the United Nations Literacy Decade in Germany. During the first „Literacy Conference“ in Bernburg, the so-called „Bernburg Theses“ were passed. They define the most important tasks for „Literacy Education“ in Germany.
The main topics of the conferences were:
25 years of Literacy Education in Germany (2003/Bernburg)
Learning with approved and with new media (2005/Frankfurt/Main)
Questions and answers in science and practice (2006/Bonn)
Innovative research – innovative practice (2007/Hamburg)
Illiterates have their say (2008/Leipzig)
Arts. Culture. Action. (2009/Hanover)
The conferences serve as platforms for exchange of experiences, for networking between the different institutions and on a personal level and for setting the next objectives. Most recent findings in science and research are presented and discussed. Functional Illiterates are invited to participate in the conferences. They give feedback on the research projects, they get to know each other and by that can form networks and structures of self-help.
Co-operation partners are the Alliance for the implementation of the United Nations Literacy Decade in Germany and different companies.
