The a3 project is looking into the provision of effective work-related concepts in literacy and basic education both in Germany and other countries. The project team is not only developing special courses and model teaching and learning plans for education providers to facilitate the transition to work and training, but also is consulting with them and the worlds of industry and science on the outcomes. The team is also developing and trying out ideas to raise awareness amongst disseminators and provide further training.
The main aims of the a3 project are:
to research, document, refine and adapt examples of good practice,
to undertake analyses of provision and needs assessments made for the preparation for training and employment from the point of view of participants and businesses in order to develop plans and materials,
to develop and test special classes and literacy and basic education plans that complement the existing provision of vocational support for young people and adult education,
to develop and test, in collaboration with local partners, teaching and learning materials for young people and adults that relate to work and the world around them,
to network local adult education providers with vocational support facilities for young people, public institutions, and local industry,
to carry out public relations work, provide disseminator training and circulate the outcomes.
The German Federal Literacy Association, represented by Andreas Brinkmann and Katja Erzkamp, is conducting the project in collaboration with Jun. Prof. Dr. Ullrich Bauer of the University of Duisburg-Essen, Faculty of Educational Sciences, and in cooperation with local and national partners from education and industry. Project research and methodology are being overseen and scientifically evaluated by Dr. Gudrun Quenzel of the University of Bielefeld.
